Llangennech 1 Jays 0
Saturday 28th February 2009
If Llangennech were to have any chance of winning the title this was seemingly a must win game against The Jays who had won 15 out of 15 in the run up to this game. Even if Llan won their games in hand, they would still be six points behind so a win was vital.
The Management made two changes to the team that crashed out of the Challenge Cup in Penllergaer last week. Alex Dakin came in for Paul Thomas and played at right back, Curtis Roberts replaced Gavin Williams in attack.
Team: Martin Williams, Alex Dakin, Christian Williams, Steffan Cook, Nathan Phillips, Tom Harris, Rhys Wakely, Dean Williams, Darren Dickeson, Curtis Roberts, Dai Thomas. Subs: Gavin Williams, Jonathan Dakin.
The first half could only be described as tight with both teams doing their best to keep each other out. Llan had chances which fell to Curtis Roberts and Alex Dakin but both failed to find the target. At the other end, Jays number 9 found space in the box but dragged his shot wide of the post.
On 35 minutes Tom Harris played a low throught ball for Dai Thomas to run onto. The referee deemed that Thomas was tackled from behind inside the area and gave a penalty. Gavin Williams, on for the injured Curtis Roberts was first to the ball and placed the ball just passed the outstretched arm of the goalkeeper into the back of the net.
The game continued as a tense battle with neither team really dominating the play for long periods. Jays were dangerous from set pieces particularly their long throws but Llan dealt with everything that was chucked at them.
It was from a free kick a yard outside the box that Jays almost found an equaliser with two minutes left. Thankfully for Llangennech the ball crashed off the crossbar and the home side were able to clear.
Llan hung on for an important three points that keeps them in the title race but they remain in fourth place for now with 16 games remaining.
