Captain Cook Fires Llan Into Quarters

Sunday 9th January 2011

Llangennech's 1sts are through to the quarter finals of the Senior Cup after a hard-fought 1-0 win away at Premier Division side Johnstown.

A first-half goal from captain Steffan Cook was enough to send the away side through to a last eight tie at home against Division One team Felinfoel.

It was a battling performance on a tricky surface, but a solid defensive display limited the Carmarthen side to very few efforts on target.

Llan were given a scare early on though when a cross into the box was met by the one of the Johnstown strikers, only to see his header loop over Martin Williams in goal and come back off the crossbar.

After that though it was the away side who had the better of play, and were unlucky not to go ahead earlier than they did.  First, Jack James' thunderous strike was tipped over by the Johnstown 'keeper before he also somehow kept out Chris Hickey's header.

But a few minutes later, after the home side failed to clear a corner, Cook was on hand to slot the ball into the bottom corner from inside the area.

Johnstown put Llangennech under pressure for long periods of the second half, but couldn't break down Llan's stubborn defence and the Division Two side held on for an excellent victory.

It's the 3rd time this season the 1sts have beaten a team from a higher division.  They've also knocked Pembrokeshire Premier League side Clarbeston Road out of the West Wales Cup, and beat Calsonic from Division One in the Challenge Cup.
