Llan Go Top And Have Promotion In Their Sights
Wednesday 27th April 2011
Llangennech's 1sts are now just one win away from sealing promotion to Division One after a 3-1 win away at rivals Penllergaer.
The result also moves them three points clear at the top of Division Two, although second placed Killay do have games in hand.
Llan went into the match against the Swansea side 3 points ahead of them but having played a game more. And it was a tense start with both keepers called upon to deal with high balls into the box.
The visitors made the breakthrough after 15 minutes, when Nick Maguire curled a side-footed effort into the far corner of the net. But his joy was short-lived when he was injured in a bad tackle that went unpunished a few minutes later. The injury forced him off, and just after being substituted he let his frustration get the better of him, and was red carded for foul and abusive language. Luckily, Tom Ballard had already come on to replace him and Llan kept eleven men on the field.
Penllergaer drew level after 25 minutes, when their striker reacted quickest to a ball played through Llan's defence to chip over Martin Williams in goal.
Llan had the better of the rest of the half though, and were unlucky not to go ahead as Dai Thomas and Tom Harris saw efforts saved by the home keeper.
It stayed 1-1 until the 70th minute when a ball over the top of the Penllergaer defence was seized upon by Tom Ballard. His persistence forced a mistake from the defenders and allowed Tom Harris to stretch and poke home from inside the box to put Llan back in front.
Harris put the result beyond doubt 10 minutes later, scoring a superb lob from the edge of the box. There was still time for Penllergaer's right back to be shown his second yellow card, and Llan held on comfortably for a vital three points.
On Saturday the 1sts travel to Llandeilo, where 3 points will guarantee a top two finish and Division One football next season. Kick off at Tregib School is at 2.30pm.Tweet
